Have you ever wondered what happens to electric vehicle batteries after their final charge? We're proud to announce that our Black Mass plant in Schwarzheide, Germany, is now operating commercially! The plant can process up to 15,000 tons of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries and production scrap each year – the equivalent of about 40,000 electric vehicle batteries being given a new purpose. We recover valuable metals such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese. These metals are then used to produce new cathode active materials. This process keeps resources in use and strengthens the European battery supply chain. BASF now covers the entire battery recycling value chain in Europe, from collection to refining. This helps our customers comply with the EU Battery Regulation and reduce their reliance on imported raw materials.
